Mission and Ministry Update

From the Director's Desk

We welcomed Spring at the Luke Clinic with the birth of 13 new babies. Each of them was delivered safely as a result of the excellent prenatal care that their moms received at the Luke Clinic. These precious little ones remind us of the gift of life that we have each been given. It is such a privilege to serve our clinic moms in the name of Jesus.

As you can see we have taken the opportunity to rebrand the clinic, with a new name, logo, vision statement, and refocused mission statement. We are very excited to have a logo that we feel reflects the women we serve. The vast majority of our patients come to us from a google search for "free pre-natal care" or simply "Luke Clinic". We feel that the name change will be easier to recognize and more relatable. We have decided that it represents a great opportunity to rebrand and refocus our ministry.

Our vision is to "Save Lives" by providing accessible relationship-based care to decrease both infant and maternal mortality rates. We also seek to "Empower Women" to make decisions for themselves and their families by increasing their access to information and wrap-around services. We seek to do ministry with our patients and not for our patients. As a ministry of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, we seek to "Build Faith" by demonstrating respect and honor for each client that fosters long-term relationships which include spiritual support in the name of Jesus.

The staff and I covet your prayers and are so appreciative of your partnership going forward. We ask you to prayerfully consider partnering with us financially.

In Christ

New Home Office
Earlier this spring we moved into our newly renovated offices located at The Historic Halleck House in Whitmore Lake. We are so grateful to Ken Dignan, the Township Supervisor, for sharing his office with us while we renovated our new offices. We have plenty of room to house our staff - Jen Wall our Medical Office Manager, Wendy Dignan our Business Manager, and Amy Kindred our Clinical Care Nurse. On Mondays, we also host Lori Smalley our Ultrasound Tech, and Dale Grimm our Mom and Baby Care Unit driver before they head out to see patients in Detroit. It is wonderful to be able to host meetings and partner with the local community to meet the needs of families in Detroit. Benjamins Closet has relocated to Living Water Church which is located half a mile down the road. We also store our Mobile Clinic, and our Mother and Baby Care Unit at their location. The church and business community have been very supportive of our ministry.  In turn, we have been able to work with some local families who were in need of baby items that we were happy to provide.

Flint Clinic
This month I have been starting the process of networking in Flint, in preparation for opening our new clinic in the Fall. Together with Pastor Christian Jones at Franklin Avenue Mission, we have secured the location, and construction plans are in place. We are in process of getting bids from contractors which has been a struggle as they are so busy at this point. We prayerfully hope to have the work completed in time for a November opening. The local health care community in Flint has been extremely welcoming and we are thrilled to have created working agreements with several related agencies.

Hosting Nursing Clinicals
We are also thrilled to be hosting Concordia School of Nursing students this month in the Detroit clinic. Students come for the Community Health clinical rotation. We are excited to be able to introduce these future nurses to a way of practicing medicine that is strikingly different from the model that many hospitals today operate. To that end, we are in discussion with Michigan State University School of Nursing and the University of Michigan School of Nursing with regards to partnerships with their programs to host their students next year.

Volunteer Recognition

Our team of volunteers is the backbone of our clinic. Many have served faithfully over several years. Today I would like to highlight the cornerstone of our clinic, Dr. Katy Gold. Dr. Gold is a board-certified family medicine physician who has provided labor and delivery, and newborn care for more than 15 years. She serves as an Associate Professor at the University of Michigan, has a master's degree in social work, and completed two research fellowships. Her research interests include obstetrics, health disparities, and mental health. Dr. Gold has served as our medical director since 2016 and is passionate about helping The Luke Clinic provide the highest quality of care while ensuring patients are cared for with compassion and acceptance. She loves working with the dedicated team at The Luke Clinic and is grateful to be able to provide this care to our patients.
